It’s almost time to get out the glittered red hearts, the cupid images and the decadent chocolate and strawberry confections! Nothing stirs the heartstrings like a heartfelt Valentine, and of all novels, “Pride and Prejudice” supplies plenty of immortal quotes, compliments of Jane Austen who wrote the story in 1813. Both major versions of the movie offer equal romantic diversion, but I must admit my favorite has Colin Firth as the arrogant Mr. Darcy and Jennifer Ehle stars as the charming Lizzie, who with her fine eyes snares the rich heir who has 20,000 pounds per year!
Timeless quotes from the movie every woman wished she would hear from her intended include:
“You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.”
“You have bewitched me body and soul, and I love, love, love you.”
“I never wish to be parted from you from this day on.”
“I am completely and perfectly and incandescently happy.” (Lizzie’s quote at the very end.)
Lizzie’s Mother has plenty to say including, “What pin money, what jewels, what carriages you will have.” But Lizzie’s independent spirit causes her to turn down the arrogant nobleman at first. Kudos to Mr. Darcy for reconsidering and allowing the cuckoo Mrs. Bennett to become his mother-in-law. Boos to Lady Catherine De Burgh as the overbearing rich aunt who wishes Mr. Darcy to marry her homely daughter to inherit her estate Rosings. And the icky cousin, the curate, Mr. Collins, who will inherit Lizzie’s home when her father passes! The movie is a great chick-flick and offers high romance, beautiful estates, steadfast characters and pompous characters, kind folk, and others open to ridicule.
Valentine’s Day is the one day out of the year when flowery sentiments are par for the course. Indulge your love with a feast for the senses–celebrate the modern-day romance you are living each day. Gaze into his or her eyes, and rekindle the feelings you experienced during courtship. Your relationship must be nurtured every day of the year–not just on February 14!!
