From 1880-1928 putz houses were lovely candy containers of German origin. Starting in 1928 and going into the 1950’s they became glittery Christmas houses of all sizes, and small ones were hung on the Christmas tree, while larger houses became central figures in Christmas dioramas and train set props. The word putz translates into “put”, but most associate the word putz with “to putter.” These glittery abodes sparkle with frosted roofs, tinseled trees and fake smoke coming out of the chimney. It doesn’t require much, a few houses, a string or two of lights, a mirrored base for the ice skating pond, and don’t forget the ice skaters, townspeople, carolers, and sleigh riders! Tuesday Morning and Hobby Lobby both have putz houses this year, and for a small price, you too can enjoy your own enchanted village! You won’t believe how magical it looks till you turn off the room lights at night!
